Copper Peak
Begin your journey by traveling Northeast to Grantsburg, WI. Stop in at the Burnett Dairy Cooperative for an amazing array of cheeses and other snacks.
Travel on through to Siren and Spooner and then head on up to Hayward, WI. There you can tour Fresh Water Fishing Museum and check out a giant statue of a Muskie.
Travel East to your first campground – Black Lake Campground in Winter, WI. The campground offers dozens of waterfront sites for tent and RV camping.
Next venture on to Ironwood, MI. There you can check out Copper Peak – the largest artificial ski jump in the world. You can go to the top for an absolutely amazing view (if you are brave enough!).
Porcupine Mountains/Lake of the Clouds
When you are ready to move on, take a detour to Porcupine Mountains State Park. There you can enjoy lots of hiking and see over 90 majestic waterfalls. Don’t forget to drive up to the Lake of the Clouds viewing area to see a breathtaking sight of the lake and the mountains. This is a particularly beautiful sight in the fall when the leaves are changing.
If you want to camp in the mountains, setup camp at Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle campground. You can view a beautiful sunset here and sometimes some Northern Lights.
Continue North about 2 hours to Keeweenaw National Historical Park. The Keeweenaw Peninsula is known as ‘Copper Country’. The park is made up of many sites, tours and museums. Make sure you tour a mine or two, visit the great museums, and explore some hiking trails.
About 45 mins North from there is your next campground, Lake Fanny Hooe Campground in Copper Harbor, MI. This is a nice, modern campground nestled in a Northwoods forest with its own trout stream. It has lots of great amenities including hot showers, clean bathrooms and a nice playground for the kids.
Wood ‘n Spoon
When you are ready to continue on your journey, head Southeast down the peninsula to your next destination, Munising, MI. On your way, make sure to stop in at the Wood’n Spoon in Mohawk, MI. They are known for their delicious Thimbleberry Jam and baked goods.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is Munising’s greatest attraction. The Pictured Rocks is comprised of over 15-miles of shoreline along Lake Superior. Over 100-miles of scenic trails are located within the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore area. These colorful sandstone cliffs tower 50 to 200 feet above the water’s surface. The Chapel Rock and Mosquito Beach Trail Loop is a highly recommended hike, if you are up for it. The roughly eleven-mile loop trail brings you to some of Pictured Rocks most Iconic Landmarks such as Chapel Rock, Inspiration Point and Mosquito Beach. What is unique about this trail is that it brings you to the top of the cliffs that most people only view from far below. The water is so crystal clear that from the top of these two hundred-foot cliffs you can see straight to the bottom.
If you want to take a little side-trip, venture over to Grand Island. Take short ferry ride and enjoy a few hours of hiking or biking on this picturesque island.
There are lots of great camping options along Lake Superior in this area for camping. The Munising Tourist Park Campground is a nice option. It has lots of scenic campsites and modern bathrooms and showers.
Depending on how far East you want to go, you can keep traveling towards Paradise, MI and see the magnificent Tahquamenon Falls State Park (with one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi) or head south to your next campsite in the Hiawatha National Forest. Little Bay De Noc Campground is a lovely spot where you can camp right on the lake shore of Lake Michigan. Other campers have recommended sites 30, 31 and 35 as the best for ideal views of the lake. Little Bay De Noc is also known as one of the best for Walleye fishing.
From here it’s about a 6-hour drive to head back to St. Paul, MN. If you want to stop and camp in-between, Luna White Deer Lake Campground in Long Lake, WI is a great choice. It is a very quiet and woodsy setting with great lake views.
